GETTING STARTED

Moving to L.A. for Acting

When thinking of Los Angeles, most people associate the sunny left coast with the glamour of old-school, big-budget studio moviemaking. But there's much more. L.A. also draws a huge number of actors because of the extensive work available in television production, commercials, voiceover work, and independent films. There's also a vibrant theatre scene - everything from little 99-seaters to larger halls like the 3,400-seat Kodak Theatre.

But how can you get there?

Before heading for Los Angeles, it's best to educate yourself and plan carefully. There are dozens of books, websites, and message boards (like ours) from which you can gather additional advice and assistance. Here are some basics.

Finding your way in and around Los Angeles as a tourist can be a task; moving there is even tougher. Even though there's public transportation, you really need to have a car. Determining which parts of town you can live in - and which to avoid - requires a certain amount of geo-savvy. Plus, you'll need to find a job, good acting classes, actor-friendly bookstores, cheap eats, good shops and much more. It's a lot to learn on your own, especially if you're researching it from 2,000 miles away.

You're not alone. Newcomers to Los Angeles range from starry-eyed beginners to people with solid regional credits. And all come with the same dream in mind - success as a performer. It's not easy, but remember, you have as good a chance as anyone to succeed in an entertainment career. Remain aware of the odds, and keep your options open. But then, that's true when taking any chance in business - or, for that matter, in life.
